new brief - quotes

For the new brief I have to illustrate a quote from the list we were given. I chose 'Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I've ever known' by Chuck Palahniuk.
I would like to create a kind of memoir/collage of family/friends and things which are/were significant in my life. The brief is only a week long which is hard for me to come up with something very quickly but I think I have a rough idea of how I would like it to look.
Below are two experiments of my sister in different mediums to get started.

and a little practice..

katherina manolessou

Katherina came into our print lesson 2 weeks ago and showed us a range of amazing books. Here are a few pictures I took from my really bad quality phone.

Made from simple lino cuts and tissue paper.

And 'A Snail Tale Made of Type' by Victor and Susie, made just from letters and punctuation.

And Katherina's own work below. My favourite was her sticker book called 'It's Love'. The book was about a couple who meet and go on loads of dates each taking alot of consideration into what they look like. They then both have doubts, consult their friends, have a big argument and split up. But at the end it has a lovely image illustrating that there's always someone round the corner. I really loved this books so these images are taken from her website as my phone pictures were really bad.

lino prints

The paper was too big for the plate thus the lines on each side. Although now I think they work quite well and could work as a divide/border between each page.

book shapes

Some of my favourites!

As I wanted my book to be a story on bullying I feel this book shape was very interesting. It could work as a hanging decoration in a childs room making it very relevant or be folded back into a book. As I only have til January I will just not have as many pages like below.

Or my book could be alot simpler if I run out of time like below.

LOVE, PEACE AND HOPE

Below are a set of bookmarks I designed for my project for those who are hearing impaired. Often speaking and writing is more difficult for those who are deaf and they therefore find reading easier. I included supportive famous quotes onto the bookmark to encourage and brighten moods as from researching first hand I discovered that people living with hearing impairment find life very difficult at times. Love, Peace and Hope is all written in Makaton sign language.

and the book encouraging those who are hearing impaired to read..

The final outcome:

work in progress

After much development which was awful I think I may be getting somewhere?

bookmark designs

The reason I chose the word 'love' is because I wanted to show that although being deaf, those who are hearing impaired appreciate what they have and do day-to-day things like the rest of us. I feel 'Love Informative Hands' portrays this message.
Below are some designs I have created so far before I print the best one from lino. I really like the bottom design and I feel this could work really well as a print.

design work

Starting out with these initial designs of the word 'LOVE' in makaton.

futher futher research

After a meeting with David he suggested I looked into sign language. Makaton is an easier form of sign language and children growing up find it a simpler way to interact. After researching into this and looking into how people cope with being deaf by looking on forums I have discovered that often those who are hearing impaired find reading alot easier than speaking. I wanted to create a gift which people would buy to raise awareness/promote for deaf organisations. I have decided on creating a series of bookmarks based on illustrator Kooky Cherry.
I love her lino printed bookmarks which has become a big influence on my next set of designs:
